According to relevant surveys, the proportion of e-cigarette use among American teenagers continues to grow, while at the same time, the proportion of cigarette use has fallen to a historically low level. This also clearly shows that the growth of e-cigarettes will not stimulate the growth of cigarettes, but will gradually replace cigarettes.
Some have questioned whether someone will smoke e-cigarettes first and then transition to cigarettes. The data shows that among non-smokers, there are very few people who regularly use e-cigarettes, and there are no cases of transition from e-cigarettes to cigarettes. If e-cigarettes make the transition to cigarettes, then cigarette sales won't continue to decline. The U.S. government sponsored an MTF study to investigate cigarette use among adolescents since 1975. The data suggests that more teens use e-cigarettes than cigarettes. 8.7% of 8th graders, 16.2% of 10th graders, and 17.1% of 12th graders had used e-cigarettes within a month.
